Job Description:
Under general supervision; conducts field inspections on commercial and residential plumbing installation for enforcement of state and county codes and ordinances; checks building plans for plumbing systems; answers inquiries and interprets plumbing codes. Performs other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications:
Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed below.
Completion of a high school equivalent education. Current possession of an Ohio certification as a plumbing inspector issued by the State of Ohio Department of Commerce.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of construction techniques for plumbing material installation; inspection procedures; blueprint/schematic reading; local & state plumbing codes; department policies & procedures; department goals & objectives.Advanced knowledge of public relations.Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid conclusions; understand technical manuals and verbal instructions associated with the trade; handle sensitive inquiries from officials and the general public; calculate fractions, decimals and percentages; maintain accurate records; prepare meaningful, concise and accurate reports; develop good rapport with public, builders, contractors & officials; communicate effectively.Skills in plumbing; testing equipment, procedures, and methods (plumbing).

• May be exposed to hazards associated with building construction, remodeling, and inspection, including abandoned or foreclosed homes, electric cables, wires, and patch panels, dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, mold, smoke, animal and human waste, unsanitary conditions, high and low temperatures, water, and adverse weather conditions.
• Work may be performed in confined spaces and in areas of high security and from ladders and mechanical lifts.
• May be required to work at heights in excess of 10 feet.

• Employee is required to reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, move, and transport inspection/test equipment, and carry objects weighing up to 60 pounds repeatedly from one location to another.
• Job requires employee to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and perform repetitive motions; utilize diagnostic equipment, hand and power tools, and other equipment to accomplish job duties.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision. Must be able to focus clearly at 20 inches or less.
Licensing/Certification:
• Plumbing Inspector: Ohio Department of Commerce Plumbing Certification.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and good driving record as defined by the Department of Law and Insurance and Risk Management, if utilization of a motor vehicle to perform the essential functions is required.
• Must maintain current certifications and licenses.
Description of Job Duties:
The duties listed below are intended to depict tasks performed by this classification.
Performs commercial and residential field inspections on rough and final plumbing installations for compliance with state and county codes and ordinances; approves installation or issues compliance orders to have violations corrected.
Confers with architects, engineers, plumbing contractors, property owners, and local officials regarding installation of sanitary plumbing compliance with local or state codes.
Responds to, investigates, and prepares follow-up information on code violation complaints (e.g., work without a permit, zoning violations, uncertified equipment, materials, or contractors, etc.).
Attends seminars, workshops, and contractors’ meetings to upgrade and maintain skills and knowledge.
Work Schedule:
Monday – Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
