Job Summary

Supervises and coordinates the work of University Housing Plumbers, including planning and scheduling plumbing maintenance and repair activities to support the operational needs of University Housing facilities. Supervisors engage in and implement University Housing's inclusion, culture and climate initiatives.

Plumbing Operations
  • Perform duties particular to and normally required in the trade of plumber, following recognized procedures and techniques for such work.
  • Plans, schedules, supervises, monitors, and directs the work of Housing Plumbers and reviews completed work to ensure compliance with applicable plumbing codes and University building standards.
  • Prioritizes plumbing work assignments and coordinates responses to urgent maintenance and repair needs.
Maintenance Coordination
  • Works closely with the Maintenance department, engineers, Supervisor of Building Craftsmen, and the Associate Director for Maintenance Operations to meet the plumbing maintenance requirements of University Housing.
  • Assists in the development and management of preventative maintenance programs related to plumbing systems and equipment.
  • Determines material and supply needs and coordinates the ordering of materials necessary to complete plumbing work.
  • Maintains records of plumbing work completed, including material orders, and inventories of tools and equipment.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provides recommendations related to hiring and disciplinary activities.
  • Utilizes University Housing's timekeeping system to review and approve employee timecards and monitors the work performance of Housing Plumbers.
  • Provides direction and feedback to Housing Plumbers and promotes compliance with University and University Housing safety requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Provides guidance and instruction to Housing Plumbers regarding plumbing procedures, maintenance, and repair work.
Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Position involves physical activities necessary to perform plumbing maintenance and repair work, including lifting and carrying materials and equipment; bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling; climbing ladders or stairs; accessing plumbing systems in tight spaces; and the use of hand and power tools.

Work may be performed indoors and outdoors and may involve wet or noisy environments, temperature changes, inclement weather, and other conditions associated with plumbing maintenance and repair work.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a recognized plumber apprenticeship program or five (5) years (60 months) of full-time journey- level plumber experience.
  • Two (2) additional years (24 months) of full-time journeyman-level plumber experience.
  • Possession of current State of Illinois Plumber's License.
  • Possession of a valid State of Illinois Class "D" Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, procedures, and safety practices of the plumbing trade.
  • Knowledge of applicable plumbing codes and University building standards.
  • Ability to plan, schedule, supervise, direct, and coordinate the work of Plumbers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot plumbing issues and communicate effectively with employees, supervisors, other trades, and departmental partners.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1930 - Plumber Sub-Foreman position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search.

The wage for this position is $59.75/hr or $124,280 annually. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints.

Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position. This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy.
