Job Overview

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solving the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

Building Maintenance Section (BMS)

BMS plays a critical role in keeping Department facilities operating safely for staff and visitors, overseeing maintenance for over 250 Department facilities citywide. It manages multiple facility renovations supporting Department initiatives and unit relocations. BMS is comprised of uniform, civilian, trades, professional, and administrative staff.

Responsibilities of the Plumber
  • Finding, diagnosing, and repairing pipes and drainage systems throughout facilities.
  • Recording reports and communications.
  • Preparing applications, reports, notices, and other documents.
  • Installing plumbing equipment, fixtures, and piping systems to maintain department facilities.

Additional Information

Minimum Qualifications
  • Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a plumber within the last ten years; or
  • At least three years of full-time experience as described above, plus relevant helper, apprentice experience, or approved trade school training, totaling five years of acceptable plumber experience.

Apprenticeship must be recognized by the appropriate authorities. Each year of helper or apprentice experience or approved schooling counts as six months of plumber experience, up to two years.

Driver License Requirement: Must possess a valid motor vehicle driver license in New York State at the time of appointment and maintain it throughout employment. Disqualifications may apply for moving violations or license suspensions.

Residency Requirement

NYC residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment, with certain exceptions based on continuous city employment.
