Job summary

Position Summary

Facility Maint Tech - MechTrd - Journey (Plumber)

Location: Chapel Hill, NC

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or Four days per week, 8:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Job Responsibilities
  • Performs plumbing repairs, installation, and preventive maintenance per applicable codes and standards.
  • Informs the supervisor and/or lead mechanic of any problems and provides updates on the status of work in progress.
  • Assists with area coverage to ensure that work orders, maintenance repairs and preventive maintenance (PM) requests are completed.
  • Works in areas occupied by students, ensuring residents’ needs are addressed while protecting privacy and personal property.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional guidelines: experience in the trade(s) areas related to the assignment may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.

Key Qualifications and Management Preferences
  • Experience in plumbing trades.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret blueprints.
  • Knowledge of general building maintenance.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills with co‑workers and Housing staff.
Required Licenses/Certifications
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to start date.
  • Cross‑connect certification or ability to obtain one within the first six months of employment.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time; navigate stairs and climb ladders; work in small tight spaces and bend, stoop and crawl to complete work.
  • Ability to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Work in stressful conditions and under critical timelines; handle small hand tools.
  • Position requires reporting to work to support critical University operations during adverse weather or other emergency conditions, including public health emergencies.

  • Valid NC Driver’s License.
