Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, repair, and modify plumbing and piping systems on campus.
  • Service drainage systems, building sewers, and related fixtures and equipment.
  • Perform pipefitting tasks including cutting, threading, assembling, and testing piping and fixtures.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on plumbing, air, gas, water, and waste systems.
  • Diagnose and repair boilers, pumps, and related equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures.

Essential Job Duties

Are you an experienced plumber looking for an opportunity to work on a varied range of facilities while making a lasting impact on a major university campus?

As a Plumber II, you will perform skilled installation, repair, maintenance, and modification of complex plumbing and piping systems that support classrooms, laboratories, offices, residence halls, and other critical campus facilities. This journey-level role offers the opportunity to apply advanced plumbing and pipefitting expertise while expanding your knowledge through exposure to secondary electrical and HVAC -related systems. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Install, maintain, repair, and modify plumbing and piping systems, including water, waste, steam, gas, chilled water, and compressed air systems.
  • Service domestic, lab, and acid waste drainage systems, building sewers, and associated fixtures and equipment.
  • Perform pipefitting tasks, including cutting, threading, assembling, testing, and installing piping, valves, supports, and fixtures.
  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance on plumbing and related air, gas, water, and waste disposal systems.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair boilers, pumps, steam systems, compressors, water softeners, and related equipment.
  • Apply working knowledge of secondary electrical and HVAC -related systems, controls, and components.
  • Ensure all work complies with Federal, State, OSHA , and Facilities Operations safety policies and procedures.
  • Identify and address safety hazards and properly use required personal protective equipment.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors, coworkers, and campus customers regarding work assignments and timelines.
  • Perform tasks that involve climbing ladders, accessing confined or elevated spaces, occasional lifting up to 60 lbs, and working in varied conditions, including exposure to areas with insects or small animals. All essential duties must be completed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the plumbing trade with a secondary trade set in electrical and HVAC .
  • NC plumbing license, or reciprocal, or local jurisdiction Journeyman plumber certification.
  • CFC certification.

  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
