The CODESYS PLC Programmer will be responsible for the design, development, testing, commissioning, and qualification support of PLC-based automation systems for a large pharmaceutical capital project. The engineer will work closely with process engineering, electrical engineering, instrumentation, validation, CQV, vendors, and project management teams to deliver compliant and reliable automated manufacturing systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and modify CODESYS PLC applications using IEC 61131-3 programming standards.
  • Program primarily in Structured Text (ST), Function Block Diagram (FBD), and Ladder Logic (LD).
  • Develop PLC control logic for process equipment, skids, utilities, and manufacturing systems.
  • Configure and integrate HMI/SCADA, remote I/O, VFDs, instrumentation, and industrial networks.
  • Integrate third-party equipment and OEM skids into the plant control system.
  • Develop equipment modules, state machines, interlocks, permissives, alarms, sequences, and recipes.
  • Review P&IDs, control narratives, functional specifications, I/O lists, and electrical drawings.
  • Participate in FAT, SAT, commissioning, and startup activities.
  • Troubleshoot PLC, instrumentation, networking, and equipment-integration issues during commissioning.
  • Generate and execute software test protocols and support IQ/OQ/PQ and CSV/CSA activities.

  • Work within GMP, GAMP 5, 21 CFR Part 11, data-integrity, and pharmaceutical quality requirements.
  • Coordinate with validation/CQV teams to ensure automation systems meet project and regulatory requirements.
  • Support the transition from project execution into manufacturing operations.

Typical Technical Requirements

  • Strong experience with CODESYS and IEC 61131-3 programming.
  • Experience with industrial communications such as EtherCAT, Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, Ethernet/IP, or Profinet.
  • Understanding of industrial instrumentation and control.
  • Ability to read P&IDs, electrical drawings, and control narratives.
  • Experience with FAT/SAT and field commissioning.
  • Familiarity with software development practices such as version control, code reviews, and structured testing.
  • Experience integrating OEM equipment and process skids.

Pharmaceutical Experience

Preferred candidates would have experience with:

  • CIP/SIP systems
  • WFI and clean utilities
  • Process skids
  • Chromatography
  • Filtration
  • Single-use manufacturing
  • Cleanrooms and environmental systems
  • GMP manufacturing environments

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Typically 5+ years of industrial automation/PLC programming experience.
  • Demonstrated CODESYS experience.
  • Pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical project experience strongly preferred.
  • Willingness to spend significant time on-site during FAT, commissioning, and startup.

A particularly strong candidate would have both CODESYS programming depth and hands-on pharmaceutical commissioning experience—someone who can take a control narrative and P&ID, develop the PLC application, troubleshoot it at the equipment, and then support the documentation/qualification required to release the system for GMP production.
