Job description

About Us: The City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department is divided into two main areas:

  1. The Parks Division: Manages and maintains all public parks, open spaces, trails, storm water retention basins, landscaping at municipal facilities, and Thunderbird Conservation Park. Responsible for monitoring and ensuring safety and security of park and facility use.
  2. The Recreation Division: Offers programs and facilities to enhance the social, physical, mental, and economic health of the community, including activities at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, Glendale Adult Center, Historic Sahuaro Ranch, five community centers, and various sports courts.

The Role: Operates heavy construction equipment in the Parks Division and performs semi-skilled and skilled work in construction, inspection, maintenance, and repair within assigned responsibilities.

Salary: This position is:

  • FLSA non-exempt, eligible for overtime for hours over 40 per week.
  • Grade 313, with an annual salary ranging from $49,446.02 to $74,196.16.

Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Leave:

  • Observes 10.5 holidays annually, with an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave for cultural or religious celebrations.
  • Vacation accrual rates:
    • 5.33 hours per pay period (about 138 hours/year)
    • Increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years
    • Caps at 7.6 hours after 10 years
  • Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period.

*Based on an 8-hour workday.

Retirement: Participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Contributions are mandatory at a current rate of 12.27%, deducted each pay period.

  • Inspects playground equipment for hazards and safety compliance.
  • Documents damage and determines repair procedures.

  • Assembles/install benches, signage, gates, and performs welding repairs.
  • Repairs drinking fountains, replaces valves, water lines, unclogs drains.
  • Operates power tools and heavy construction equipment like front-end loaders, backhoes, and trenchers.
  • Sets up preventive maintenance schedules for playgrounds.
  • Performs routine equipment maintenance and keeps logs.
  • Pours and finishes concrete, installs fences, and assists in planting.
  • Operates city vehicles with a valid Arizona Driver License (Class D).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Requires two years of heavy equipment operation, one year fence installation and repair, and one year concrete work experience.

    Equivalent education, training, and experience are acceptable. One year of relevant experience may substitute for each year of education.

    Knowledge of:

    • Playground design and safety, heavy equipment operation, safety practices, traffic laws, fence repair, and concrete pouring.

    Ability to:

    • Get certified as a Playground Safety Inspector within 3 years.
    • Install and repair playgrounds, perform heavy lifting, work at heights, operate city vehicles, and communicate effectively.

    Special Requirements:

    • Certification from the National Playground Safety Institute within 6 months of hire.
    • Valid Class D Arizona Driver License.
    • Safety-sensitive position requiring drug and alcohol testing, including a post-offer physical.

    Position involves climbing, bending, crawling, lifting up to 75 lbs, and working in challenging environments.
