Platform Engineer

The Platform Engineer performs operating system and platform engineering across a diverse set of enterprise technologies. This includes system administration, automation, performance management, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and security risk reduction. This team serves as a systems integration nexus—understanding how services operate across platforms and how they interconnect is a core responsibility. This role spans multiple environments including Linux, Windows, OpenShift container and virtualization platforms, storage, and other infrastructure systems. A strong emphasis is placed on improving security posture across all supported technologies.

What you will be doing in this position

As an engineer at this level, you will work both independently and collaboratively to design, implement, and maintain systems that support a wide variety of university needs. While much of the day‑to‑day work requires individual ownership and focus, success in this role depends on close collaboration with other engineers, project managers, security teams, and campus partners. You will regularly participate in shared design discussions, contribute to team decisions, and help ensure solutions align with broader platform and security priorities. You will also mentor student employees, helping them develop technical and professional skills as they gain real‑world experience.

Details of Essential Functions
Production Support
  • Provide Level 3 support for on‑premises and cloud‑hosted systems
  • Maintain reliability, performance, and availability of platform services
  • Integrate systems into monitoring, logging, and alerting frameworks
  • Work with vendor support when needed
Business Partner
  • Consult with campus departments on platform capabilities and best practices
  • Help evaluate technologies and guide adoption decisions
  • Translate technical concepts into practical solutions for diverse customers
Engineering
  • Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and maintain systems across multiple platforms
  • Build, maintain, upgrade, troubleshoot, and operate OpenShift clusters and their supporting infrastructure
  • Automate system provisioning, configuration, and maintenance (e.g., Ansible/AWX)
  • Troubleshoot complex system and integration issues
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement long‑term fixes
  • Improve system integration across platforms and services
  • Collaborate with team members and stakeholders on system design, architecture decisions, and implementation strategies
Security Focus
  • Identify, prioritize, and remediate system vulnerabilities
  • Reduce security risk through hardening, automation, and standardization
  • Partner with security teams to implement controls and best practices
  • Ensure systems meet institutional security requirements and compliance standards
What qualifies you for this role
Education and Experience

This position provides an opportunity for people of varying levels of skill. If you have a lot of education, experience, and skill, we’ll compensate you accordingly. If you are early in your career, this could be a great opportunity for you, too. Different levels of pay are assigned by the hiring department depending on experience/education/skills and business needs.

  • Level 53: Bachelor’s degree or four years of a combination of education and relevant experience. ($73,000-$95,000)

  • Level 55T: Bachelor’s degree and five years of related experience, or master’s degree and 3 years, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience is required. Minimum of 2 years of technical supervision experience is preferred. ($102,000-$132,500)
Skills, abilities, or knowledge

You are not required to have experience in all areas listed below. What you don’t know we can teach you. We are seeking candidates with a broad platform mindset and a willingness to learn. • Reverse proxies and load balancers (e.g., HAProxy)
  • Enterprise server and storage platforms (Dell, HP, Pure, etc.)
  • Identity, authentication, and integration technologies (SSO, APIs, SCIM)
Familiarity with:
  • Systems design, deployment, and performance optimisation
  • Networking concepts and system integration
  • Monitoring and observability practices
  • Security concepts, vulnerability management, and risk mitigation
  • Cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments
Personal Skills
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively within a team environment
  • Ability to balance independent work with shared ownership and collective decision‑making
  • Customer‑focused mindset with the ability to engage a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Effective communication—able to explain technical concepts and participate in group decision‑making
  • Self‑motivated with strong ownership, while recognizing when to involve others
  • Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills
