Job summary

Alaska Power & Telephone is hiring a part-time Plant Watchperson in Allakaket, Alaska. The role involves daily plant visits to monitor the facility, record information such as monthly meter reads and fuel dips, and task engine oil changes when needed.

You will support local telecom operations and assist during outages, day or night. Required are a High School Diploma or GED, 1–2 years of office or customer service experience, and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and 10-key typing.
  • 1-2 years of office or customer service experience.
  • Valid driver's license and insurability by AP&T.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for training or meetings.
  • Ability to professionally represent AP&T at community events and outreach activities.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening; may be random testing.

Responsibilities

  • Power related tasks: meter reads, fuel dips, engine oil changes, assist with outages and field issues as directed.
  • Provide local hands to work with power engineering and operations to resolve outages at the plant or distribution.
  • Provide local support for technicians traveling into the community.
  • Telecom related tasks (if applicable): test dial-tone at NID, assist with calls testing, support telecom engineering and operations to resolve outages.

Plant Watchperson

Compensation: $28/hour

Expected hours: 10 – 20 per week

Alaska Power & Telephone is hiring for a part-time Plant Watchperson in Allakaket, Alaska. This position will be responsible for daily plant visits to monitor the facility and record information. This includes monthly meter reads and fuel dips, meter reading, and possibly changing oil on the engines. This position will assist the local telecom operations as needed. Candidate will need to be available to advise Tok operations of the outages and assist with outages if requested to do so, day or night.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Power Related Tasks
    • Meter reads
    • Fuel dips
    • Engine oil changes
    • Provide local hands to work at direction of power engineering and operations to resolve outages or issues in thepowerplant or on distribution.
    • Provide local support for technicians traveling into the community
  • Telecom Related Tasks (if applicable)
    • Use telephone handset to test dial-tone atNID (training to be provided by AP&T technicians;)
    • Perform testing of calling issue
    • Provide local hands to work with telecom engineering and operations to resolve outages or issues in the central office or cabinets
    • Provide local support for technicians traveling into the community.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1-2 years of office or customer service experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and 10-key
  • Valid driver's license and insurability by AP&T
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for training or meetings
  • Ability to professionally represent AP&T and promote our services at community events and outreach activities.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening. May be subject to random testing without notice.
  • Resilience to Alaska's rugged weather and remote conditions
Desired Qualifications
  • 1 year mechanical or electrical experience
Physical Requirements of the Job
  • At times work will be performed in loud environments requiring hearing protection
  • At times work will be performed in non-temperature-controlled environments
  • At times work will be performed around rotating equipment
  • At times work will be performed while sitting, standing, crouching, squatting and at heights
  • At times work will be performed in a standard office environment with regularly scheduled working hours
  • Must be capable of: Safely lifting of up to 30 pounds on occasion, main good balance
  • Safety and PPE must be worn at all times when performing work in the field
  • Occasional travel to Tok may be required
