General Statement of Duties

Under direct supervision, this employee is responsible for monitoring the proper operation of and controlling the various processes and equipment in a facility (e.g., water/wastewater treatment plant, pumping station). May perform process maintenance tasks to ensure normal, continuous operations. Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)

(Illustrative only. Not all positions require all KSAs listed.)

Knowledge Of
  • High school mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; solving word problems using mathematical equations). High school algebra desirable.
  • Safety policies and procedures, e.g., Employee Safety Instruction Manual and applicable agency requirements.
Skill To
  • Operate and maintain plant equipment safely (including skimming, shoveling, turning large valves, controlling high-pressure water hoses, climbing ladders, replacing shear pins, cleaning filters, and strainers).
  • Monitor computer displays, recognize priorities, and modify processes to avoid violations.
  • Use tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, grease guns, etc.
  • Transfer samples using dippers, operate discharge hoses, and submersible pumps.
  • Operate a personal computer and standard office equipment.
  • Open/close valves from 1 to 72 inches, move containers, and operate hoses of various sizes.
  • Use basic tools for cleaning debris from equipment.
  • Operate assigned vehicle as needed.
Ability To
  • Read gauges, diagrams, charts, and computer graphics.
  • Solve word problems with mathematical equations.
  • Recognize process conditions indicating failures or issues.
  • Follow instructions and understand plant processes and treatment strategies.
  • Work in various weather conditions, in confined spaces, at heights, and around machinery.
  • Maintain accurate records and communicate effectively.
  • Remain calm in stressful situations and respond to alarms and noises.
  • Lift up to 60 lbs., wear respiratory protection, and climb ladders up to 25 feet.
Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED required. Valid Driver's License required. May need to obtain Ohio EPA certifications depending on department.

Other Requirements

Work irregular shifts, including weekends and holidays. Certification and satisfactory performance during probation are required for promotion.

Environmental and Physical Conditions

Indoor and outdoor work, exposure to extreme weather, chemicals, sewage, and confined spaces. Physical ability to perform duties including lifting, climbing, and operating machinery.
