Job summary

The Town of Culpeper's Environmental Services Department is seeking a Plant Mechanic to maintain and repair machinery in water and wastewater facilities, ensuring continuous operations.

Qualifications require a high school diploma and substantial maintenance experience; a Virginia CDL is required.

Job description

The Town of Culpeper’s Environmental Services Department is seeking qualified applicants for a Plant Mechanic.

Primary functions include:

• Maintain and repair specialized machinery and equipment in water or wastewater treatment plants and related facilities.


• Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, motor control systems, and motor starters; use appropriate electrical equipment to diagnose issues with VFDs, motors, and related equipment.


• Inspect, repair, and overhaul electromechanical and solid-state electrical equipment using electrical test equipment, meters, and powered and non-powered tools.


• Repair and replace electrical wiring, controls, lighting systems, and fuses; install electrical apparatus, fixtures, alarm equipment, and other system components.


• Perform circuit breaker repair and maintenance; install safety and distribution components, including switches, emergency shutoffs, resistors, circuit breaker panels, and lockout/tagout stations.


• Repair pump motors and related equipment; use hand, bench, and machine tools to maintain and repair equipment.


• Operate heavy equipment in the performance of assigned tasks and perform related duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications:

• Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the electrical and mechanical trades.


• General knowledge of occupational hazards associated with maintenance operations and the ability to take and enforce appropriate safety precautions.


• Ability to work from sketches, blueprints, wiring schematics, and equipment manuals, and to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.


• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.


• Skill in the use and care of bench and hand tools, machines, and equipment.

Education & Experience:Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in water and/or wastewater treatment plant maintenance work. Possession of a CDL valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
