Job summary

The Town of Farmville Public Works Department is seeking a Mechanic I (Utilities) to maintain and repair mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems for water and wastewater infrastructure and town facilities. The role requires routine preventive maintenance and emergency response capabilities.

Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma or GED and relevant technical training; a Class B CDL is preferred or obtainable within a year. Competitive salary and benefits offered.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; vocational/technical program in mechanical systems or industrial maintenance preferred.
• Valid Driver’s License with +3 points; Class B CDL preferred or willing to obtain CDL within 1 year.
• 1–3 years of facilities maintenance, construction, mechanical maintenance and repairs experience; water/wastewater/electrical control preferred.
• Satisfactory pass of criminal background check and drug/alcohol screen.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems (pumps, motors, VFDs, motor starters, SCADA, valves, generators, treatment plant equipment).
• Perform routine maintenance on buildings, facilities, utility systems, and public properties.
• Maintain HVAC systems, change filters, inspect building systems, and address facility maintenance needs.
• Install/upgrade mechanical systems and components per engineering specs and safety standards.
• Conduct preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
• Respond to emergencies and weather-related events to restore services safely.
• Maintain records of maintenance activities, inventory, and work orders.
• Comply with OSHA, confined space, and PPE requirements.
• Coordinate with utility operators, engineers, contractors, and staff on maintenance and improvements.
• Monitor inventory of parts, tools, and supplies.
• Assist with snow removal and other emergencies as needed.
• Perform other related duties.

Job description

The Town of Farmville Public Works Department is accepting applications for the position of Mechanic I (Utilities). This position performs skilled work involving the maintenance, repair, installation, and operation of equipment and systems essential to Town utility operations, including water and wastewater infrastructure, general building maintenance, electrical, plumbing, traffic signal maintenance, HVAC systems, preventive maintenance, and emergency repairs to support the safe and efficient operation of Town infrastructure and public facilities.

Essential Job Functions

• Perform maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical systems, including pumps, motors, variable frequency drives, motor starters, SCADA systems, valves, generators, and treatment plant equipment to ensure efficient operation.
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on Town buildings, facilities, utility systems, and public properties.
• Maintain HVAC systems, perform filter changes, inspect building systems, and address general facility maintenance needs to ensure safe and function public buildings.
• Install and upgrade mechanical systems and components, including piping, fittings, and control systems, in accordance with engineering specifications and safety standards.
• Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and extend the lifespan of equipment, facilities, and infrastructure
• Respond to emergency equipment failures, electrical interruptions, building maintenance issues, and weather-related events to restore services safely and efficiently.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, inventory, and completed work orders.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations, including OSHA standards, confined space procedures, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Coordinate and collaborate with utility operators, engineers, contractors, and other municipal staff on maintenance activities and system improvements.
• Monitor and maintain inventory of parts, tools, and supplies necessary for repairs and maintenance operations.
• Assist with snow removal and other emergency operations during inclement weather events.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; completion of a vocational or technical program in mechanical systems, industrial maintenance, or a related field preferred.
• Must possess a valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory point balance of +3 or better; Class B CDL preferred or willing to obtain CDL within 1 year of hiring.
• Must have a minimum of one to three years of experience in facilities maintenance, construction, mechanical maintenance and repairs, preferably in water, wastewater, and/or electrical control.
• Applicants must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check and drug/alcohol screen

Skills

• Knowledge of general building maintenance.
• Knowledge in diagnosing and repairing mechanical and hydraulic systems.
• Knowledge of electrical systems, plumbing, and welding is an asset.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
• Operate a variety of equipment, including dump trucks, bucket trucks, crane trucks, loader/backhoe, and forklifts

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, and perform tasks in various weather conditions. Must be able to stand, bend, and climb for extended periods.

Availability

Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call shifts for emergency repairs.

Hiring salary $37,408 to $45,000 dependent upon experience and qualifications.
