Job summary

The City of Lynchburg is seeking a Building & Equipment Plant Mechanic Apprentice to coordinate and perform repair and maintenance of heavy industrial machinery, prioritizing water treatment and pumping equipment. The role supports 24/7 plant operations with rotating on-call duties during nights, holidays and weekends, compensated accordingly.

Starting pay for Plant Apprentice is $20/hr, with progression options toward Plant Mechanic and Plant Mastercraft Mechanic based on qualifications and

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED plus considerable mechanical maintenance experience with heavy industrial machinery.
• Experience in repair and maintenance of pumping equipment and water-related machinery is preferred.
• Must be able to obtain forklift certification within 6 months of employment.
• Background checks required and IS100/IS700 (NIMS) training within 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Inspect equipment and determine needed maintenance.
• Replace and maintain pumps, motors, valves, and related components.
• Perform general plumbing repair and installation; weld and fabricate repair parts.
• Maintain records of work and purchases; rotate on-call coverage for after-hours emergencies.
