Job summary

JERA Americas is seeking a Plant Manager for its Canal Generating Station. Canal Generating consists of two facilities at one site:

  • Canal 1&2, is a 565 MW oil fired facility commissioned in 1968 and a 559 MW oil/natural gas fired facility commissioned in 1976
  • Canal 3 is a 333 MW dual-fuel, H-class simple cycle combustion turbine commissioned in 2019, co-located with Canal 1&2 located in Sandwich, MA.

The Canal Generating Station Plant Manager oversees the daily operations, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of the facility to ensure efficient and safe electricity generation. The Plant Manager is responsible for managing personnel, budgets, and regulatory requirements, while also optimizing plant performance and implementing safety protocols.

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to lead and motivate diverse union and non-union staff
  • Manage safety, health and regulatory compliance to the top performance in the industry
  • Supervise the day-to-day activities of the power plant, including power generation, turbine operation, equipment maintenance, and maintenance of the 80-acre Canal generating station site
  • Ensure the plant adheres to all safety regulations, environmental standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Hire, train, and evaluate staff; resolve personnel issues; and ensure a positive work environment.
  • Prepare and manage the plant budget, including operations and maintenance costs, administrative and general costs, and capital expenditures.
  • Implement strategies to improve plant efficiency, reduce costs, and maximize output.
  • Oversee maintenance schedules, preventive maintenance, capital plans, and repair activities to ensure equipment reliability.
  • Develop and implement emergency plans and respond to incidents or breakdowns.
  • Possess understanding of merchant, wholesale electricity markets and power generation revenue sources
  • Perform all functions within applicable state, federal and local laws and ISO-New England, FERC, and NERC rules and procedures
  • Assist the development team as needed with potential expansion and repowering initiatives
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports on plant operations and performance
  • Coordinate with other departments within JERA, manage vendors, and regulatory agencies
  • Serve as liaison with regional leaders, town officials and local community when needed representing the company and plant with professionalism and respect for others
  • Strong leader who has the savvy and experience to lead a multi-functional team and a union workforce
  • Deep knowledge of power generation, conventional thermal cycle steam plants, large frame gas turbines and LTSA’s

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has significant supervisory responsibilities.

Power Plant Manager’s work environment involves a combination of office work and on-site supervision at an operating thermal power plant station.

Physical Demands

The physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, and occasionally lifting objects up to 50 pounds, utilizing typical PPE equipment, standard in the power generation industry

Additional requirements may involve working in various environments, including elevated areas, confined spaces, and extreme temperatures.

Primary Work Location

USA-Massachusetts-Sandwich

Expected Hours of Work

Days and hours of work are established between the employee and the supervisor but primarily M-F business hours subject to plant operating conditions. Position may require frequent nights, weekends and holiday availability due to the 24/7/365 nature of the power industry

Travel

Business travel is expected for this position, which will include regional business travel and visits to Houston office with possible overnight stays

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, or a related field or equivalent industry experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of previous experience as a Power Plant Manager for a powerplant of 100 megawatts or more.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in business or a technical field.
  • 10 + years of experience in a leadership position in a power plant.

  • Extensive knowledge of power plant operations, equipment, and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team, manage resources, and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve problems related to plant operations and safety.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with staff, management, and regulatory agencies.
  • Understanding of relevant environmental, safety, and power plant regulations.
  • Ability to prepare and manage budgets and track financial performance.
  • Strong commitment to safety and ability to implement and enforce safety procedures.
