Job summary

Smith-Midland Corporation seeks an experienced Manufacturing Operations Leader to direct and optimize the day-to-day activities of our precast manufacturing facilities. You will oversee multiple shops and yard operations, ensuring safety, quality, on-time production, and cost efficiency.

Reporting to the General Manager, you will drive productivity, implement upgrades, and collaborate with engineering, sales, and shipping to meet schedules and budgets.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • 5–10 years of experience in the precast concrete industry.
  • Experience supervising a manufacturing workforce.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate day-to-day activities of manufacturing departments to meet safety, quality, schedule, and cost goals.
  • Direct a workforce of 30–50 through managers and supervisors.
  • Set up and update schedules in coordination with engineering, sales and shipping.
  • Monitor performance and productivity; implement corrective actions and productivity improvements.
  • Produce reports for accounting and monitoring of operations.
  • Maintain safe work environment and enforce safety policies.
  • Coordinate with maintenance for equipment upkeep and downtime minimization.
  • Coordinate with purchasing to ensure timely material supply.

Job description

Provides leadership, management and technical expertise to the Smith-Midland Corporation of South Carolina manufacturing operations team. Directs and manages the manufacturing operations in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner. Monitors and controls operations to achieve safety, quality, schedule, and cost goals. This position will report to the General Manager.ResponsibilitiesCoordinates the day-to-day activities of the manufacturing departments, including the utility plants, batch plant, carpentry shop, steel shop, welding shop, yard, finishing and material handling.Through managers and supervisors directs a work force of 30-50. Attends to all personnel matters in their area of responsibility to achieve a motivated, productive and capable workforce. Administers company rules and procedures for the personnel under their responsibility.In close coordination with engineering, sales, and shipping, sets up and updates schedules, assigns resources and effectively follows up on progress to meet manufacturing and shipping deadlines.Monitors the performance and productive output of operations and takes corrective action as required, makes recommendations and implements productivity improvement initiatives and equipment upgrades.Produces various reports required for accounting purposes and to monitor the productive output of their area of responsibility.Makes products of high quality that meet or exceed specifications, company standards and expectations. Strives to continuously improve the quality of products.Maintains a safe work environment and promotes safe work practices. Communicates and implements company and regulatory safety policies and standards.Ensures proper operation of all equipment, follows up on its condition and coordinates required repairs with maintenance to ensure the preservation of capital and minimization of downtime. Also maintains high standards of housekeeping.Coordinates with purchasing to maintain a timely supply of all materials required for uninterrupted production.Uses standard work and standard work auditing to ensure quality programs are maintained and continuously advanced.EducationBachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related fieldAdvanced degree (e.g., MBA) can be beneficialExperience5-10 years of experience in the precast concrete industryPrior management or supervisory experience in a manufacturing environmentTechnical KnowledgeIn-depth understanding of precast concrete production processesFamiliarity with quality control standards and testing proceduresKnowledge of relevant industry regulations and safety standardsSkills and CompetenciesStrong leadership and team management abilitiesExcellent problem-solving and decision-making skillsEffective communication (both written and verbal)Proficiency in project management and schedulingAbility to read and interpret technical drawings and specificationsCertifications (Preferred but not required)Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) certificationOSHA safety certificationAdditional qualificationsUnderstanding of lean manufacturing principlesProficiency with ERP systems and production management softwareBudget management and cost control experience
