Job summary

Knight's Companies in Columbia, SC is seeking a Plant Maintenance Technician to ensure safe, efficient operation of ready-mix plants, precast equipment, and related structures. You will perform routine, preventive and corrective maintenance and troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.

Requirements include 2–4 years of experience with heavy process machinery, a high school diploma, and ability to read blueprints. Travel up to 50% may be required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2–4 years of experience with heavy process machinery (cement industry preferred).
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and environmental safety regulations for plant operations.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for complex plant equipment.
  • Welding, fabrication and precision alignment capabilities.
  • Ability to read technical drawings, blueprints and schematics.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Good planning and organizational abilities with multitasking.
  • Effective communication and coaching across levels.
  • Independent and team work in a fast-paced setting.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to work varying shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safety and environmental policy compliance and lead by example.
  • Consistently use PPE and address safety issues with supervisors or managers.
  • Complete required safety training within deadlines.
  • Perform routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance on ready-mix plants, precast equipment and related structures.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Inspect machinery and perform necessary repairs for optimal operation.
  • Install, repair, and maintain heavy process equipment; fabricate and weld as needed.
  • Rig, lift and handle heavy equipment safely; read blueprints and schematics.
  • Document work in logs and maintain maintenance records.
  • Provide maintenance training during walk-throughs with plant managers and coach on requirements.

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Plant Maintenance Technician to join our team, ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of our ready-mix concrete plants, precast equipment, and associated plant structures. What You'll Do
  • Maintain full compliance with all safety and environmental policies and procedures, ensuring both personal and team adherence.
  • Consistently use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to uphold safety standards.
  • Address safety-related issues immediately with supervisors or plant managers to prevent incidents.
  • Complete all assigned safety training within required timeframes to stay current with safety protocols.
  • Perform routine, preventative, and corrective maintenance on wet batch and central batch ready-mix plants, precast equipment, and plant-related structures.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems to minimize downtime.
  • Inspect plant machinery regularly, recommend, and perform necessary repairs to ensure optimal operation.
  • Install, repair, and maintain heavy industrial process equipment to support production needs.
  • Fabricate, weld, and modify parts to restore equipment to service.
  • Safely rig, lift, and handle heavy equipment during installations or repairs.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics.
  • Use precision measuring tools to dismantle, align, and reassemble machinery components.
  • Respond to urgent calls outside of normal business hours.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and document all work in logs.
  • Conduct regular walkthroughs with plant managers to provide ongoing maintenance training.
  • Coach plant managers on plant maintenance requirements.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 2 to 4 years of experience with heavy process machinery (cement industry preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industrial mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently and 75+ lbs. occasionally with assistance.
  • Prolonged standing, walking, bending, climbing, and working in various physical positions.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, dust).
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces as required.
  • Manual dexterity to operate tools, precision instruments, and industrial equipment.
  • Ability to operate and safely maneuver forklifts, cranes, boom lifts, and other mobile equipment.
  • Willingness to respond to maintenance needs outside of regular business hours.
  • Ability to travel overnight 50%.
