Overview

The Plant Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the repair, maintenance, and daily operation of the hospital plant and auxiliary systems under the direction of the Chief Engineer. This position provides direct supervision of the Steam and Plumbing shops and ensures continuous, safe, and efficient operation of building systems serving approximately 2,000,000 square feet of patient care, clinical, and support areas, including designated off‑site properties.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises day‑to‑day operations of the Steam and Plumbing shops, including assignment of work, staff scheduling, and performance monitoring.
  • Directs preventive and corrective maintenance activities for plant utilities, steam distribution systems, hot and cold water systems, pumps, valves, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Ensures all work complies with applicable codes, regulatory requirements, and hospital standards (e.g., Joint Commission, NFPA, DOB, DOH).
  • Conducts routine inspections of mechanical spaces, utility systems, and equipment to identify issues and verify optimal performance.
  • Coordinates maintenance activities to support uninterrupted patient care operations.
  • Assists the Chief Engineer in planning, coordinating, and monitoring capital and operational projects.
  • Oversees contractor work, ensuring adherence to safety guidelines, work scope, and project timelines.
  • Maintains documentation, logs, and reports required for inspections and regulatory compliance.
  • Supports safety programs including lockout/tagout, confined space procedures, water management protocols, and environment of care requirements.
  • Provides guidance, training, and development for shop personnel and promotes a culture of professionalism and service excellence.
  • Maintains inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment; assists with budget planning and cost management initiatives.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in plant operations, mechanical systems, or facilities maintenance.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory or lead experience in a facilities, institutional, or healthcare environment.
  • Strong knowledge of steam systems, plumbing systems, pumps, valves, controls, and related infrastructure.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Preferred:
  • Experience working in a hospital or large institutional facility.
  • NYC Certificates of Fitness (e.g., S 12, S 13, P 98).
  • Experience with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
