Job summary

American Electric Power (AEP) seeks a Plant Equipment Operator to monitor, service and maintain plant equipment, ensuring safe operation and timely communication of status to control staff. The role includes line isolation, routine maintenance, and assisting in outages.

Residency within an hour of the plant site is required. The position offers growth potential with staged requirements and compliance with safety and environmental guidelines.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and at least 2 years industrial maintenance and/or operations experience is required.
• Associate degree in mechanical, electrical, power plant technology or related technical degree.
• Preferred: Operations experience in chemical, industrial, refinery or military environments.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and inspect all plant equipment for normal operation.
• Identify, record, and report abnormal conditions to the proper authority.
• Communicate operating status of plant equipment during shift changes to operators and supervisors.
• Assist in troubleshooting equipment problems and document these problems.
• Assist in preparing boilers, turbines and auxiliaries for operation and removal from service.
• Perform routine cleaning of plant areas, tools, and equipment, including outside areas.
• Operate, clean and lubricate equipment necessary to perform these tasks.
• Assist with isolation of plant equipment and placing/removing clearance tags.
• Operate and maintain basic water treating systems and perform related tests.
• Assist in proper unloading and handling of bulk products.
• Collect and prepare samples and perform tests with basic analytical equipment.
