Job summary

CAMS - Texas is seeking a Plant Engineer – Environmental Systems to oversee the Wet Limestone Slurry Flue Gas Desulfurization system at a coal-fired plant. You will own rotating equipment performance, thermal and fluid dynamics, and ensure safe operation with cross-functional collaboration.

The role requires a BS in mechanical/chemical/industrial engineering or an equivalent technical degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, plus familiarity with WFGD and plant piping systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or technical degree with coal-fired power experience; multiple pathways accepted.
  • 5+ years supporting mechanical equipment in a power plant environment.
  • PE license preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization (WFGD) units.
  • Experience with piping, valves, lubrication, and rotating equipment.

Job description

The Plant Engineer – Environmental Systems is responsible for providing technical and engineering oversight for environmental systems at the coal-fired power generation station, with primary responsibility for the Wet Limestone Slurry Flue Gas Desulfurization System (WFGD). This role serves as the equipment and system owner for assigned areas of the station, with an emphasis on the mechanical performance, reliability, and safe operation of environmental systems. A working knowledge of power plant systems, operating principles, and equipment interfaces is expected.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain knowledge of flue gas desulfurization and wastewater treatment process systems, including material handling and conveyor components, lining systems, limestone and reagent systems, dewatering and gypsum handling systems, slurry pumps, vacuum pumps, fluid pumps, piping, and chemical handling systems. The Plant Engineer is responsible for supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the WFGD and associated support systems.
  • Provide technical ownership for assigned plant systems and equipment, with emphasis on rotating equipment, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, thermal performance, and coal-fired power plant operations.
  • Investigate plant equipment operational and mechanical issues, lead resolution efforts, support equipment upgrades and modifications, develop new projects, manage project execution, and assist with budget development and cost control.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Maintenance, Technical, and Administrative groups to effectively use the station Work Management Process and compliance tools to maintain equipment reliability and regulatory compliance within the assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Technical personnel, and outside contractors on routine maintenance and outage coordination. Maintain an organized, prioritized backlog of work activities necessary to support station objectives.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering with at least five years of experience supporting mechanical equipment in a power plant environment.
  • A technical degree with coal-fired power generation experience, demonstrated technical capability, and 10 or more years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering.
  • Professional Engineering license preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization (WFGD) units and related processes.
  • Experience with mechanical equipment commonly found in power plants, including piping systems, valves, and lubrication systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex site projects simultaneously while maintaining safety, schedule, and budget expectations.
  • Knowledge of vibration analysis, thermal performance, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer.
  • Ability to define and perform testing to identify problems, analyze field data, and translate results into practical technical direction for mechanical equipment repairs and system performance improvements.
  • Responsible for planning and tracking capital and O&M expenditures for short- and long-term planning requirements.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, attention-to-detail, time-management, and pressure-management skills. Effective interpersonal communication skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, PI/EDS, and DCS are preferred.
  • Experience with Emerson Ovation control systems (preferred)
  • General software knowledge in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint…etc.) and Work Management Software (Maximo).

$85,000 - $120,000 a year

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record, as this position requires occasional travel for company business. Candidates should be comfortable operating a vehicle as part of their job responsibilities and must meet any applicable company and insurance requirements.
