Job summary

Shelby County Government is seeking a Plans Examiner III to review and approve building plans for code compliance in Memphis. You will assess plans across building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes and coordinate with architects, engineers, and contractors as needed.

The role requires extensive knowledge of codes, strong communication, and the ability to interpreting complex requirements. A valid state certification within the first year of hire is expected, with residency requirements

Responsibilities

• Consults with technical and professional architects, engineers and contractors on various aspects of design and construction projects.
• Communicates complex and technical requirements relating to the permit process, building codes and zoning ordinances.
• Works in a team environment with other examiners and permit technicians, keeps management informed of unusual situations during the review process.
• Provides field inspections, as necessary.
• Ensure files are maintained on floor plans and site plans for all permits issued.
• Ensures the proposed use is allowed in the zoning district and that structures do not encroach upon required setbacks.
• Performs other related duties as required or directed.

Job description

Position Summary

Works under general supervision of a Plans Examiner III and is responsible for reviewing and approving simple to moderately complex building and development plans for code compliance with building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and codes and regulations.

Pay Grade: 51

Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education.

Minimum Qualifications

• Five (5) years of experience in building construction, building drafting, building design or related field; AND


• High school diploma or possess a GED; OR


• One (1) years of experience in building construction, building drafting or related field and a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, architecture or related field; OR


• An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.


• PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.

Physical Requirements

• Must pass a physical examination.


• Must be able to lift and carry building plans weighing up to 50 pounds.

Special Requirements

• Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license or secure one by the date of employment.


• Must have daily access to an operable automobile and meet county requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.


• Must possess or obtain state certification as a Residential and Commercial Building Code Inspector or Plans Examiner within one (1) year of hire date, one of which must be obtained within the first six (6) months.
