Job summary

IMEG is hiring a Planning Intern in Hartford, CT to assist the planning team with various projects and tasks, supporting research, data collection, and community engagement efforts that contribute to the development and implementation of planning initiatives. Over 10-12 weeks, you will gain practical experience while supporting active planning work alongside senior planners.

In this role, you will help prepare maps, reports, and planning documents, participate in public meetings and workshops, and support zoning and community plan reviews. You will join a public-sector transportation and planning team serving clients across Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Vermont, and Pennsylvania, with current work emphasizing transportation planning, community planning, engagement, strategic communications, and environmental planning.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist in conducting research on planning issues, including demographic trends, land use patterns, and environmental impacts.
  • Help prepare maps, reports, and planning documents using GIS software and other tools.
  • Participate in public meetings and workshops to gather community input and provide information on planning initiatives.
  • Assist in reviewing zoning applications and community plans to ensure compliance with local regulations and ordinances.
  • Conduct site visits to gather data and assess compliance with planning regulations.
  • Work with public officials, developers, and community members to support planning projects.
  • Help prepare reports and presentations to communicate planning proposals and findings to stakeholders.
  • Provide support to senior planners in managing planning projects and initiatives.
What You’ll Bring
Required
Education and Experience
  • Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Planning, Environment Studies, Architecture, or Arts, or equivalent required
Skills and Abilities
  • Experience with AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Adobe Suite, and SketchUp
  • Strong interest in design consulting
  • Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook
Preferred
  • Prior internship experience in the consulting industry preferred
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 25 pounds
  • Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull
  • Will have limited exposure to outside weather conditions and loud noises

  • Urban transportation and planning team serving public-sector clients across Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Vermont, and Pennsylvania.
  • Current work emphasizes transportation planning, community planning, engagement, strategic communications, and environmental planning.
  • Recent work includes CTDOT State Highway Safety Planning On-Call and Citywide Park and Trail Connectivity, both in the Government (City/County/State) market.

State of Connecticut Pay Range: $22.00 – $24.00 per hour

The range listed above represents the base pay IMEG reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position in the work location identified above at the time of posting. For positions available in multiple locations, the minimums and maximums may vary based on work location.

Individual compensation will be determined based on job‑related factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.
