Job summary

New York ISO is seeking a Planning Engineer to support interconnection studies and transmission planning across New York State. You’ll review facilities, create base cases, and coordinate with customers and utilities to ensure accurate modeling and analysis.

The role involves performing steady‑state, short‑circuit, and stability studies, evaluating deliverability requirements, and producing study reports. A bachelor’s in EE and 3+ years in planning are expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (power-systems concentration preferred).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in power-system planning or design, especially transmission system facilities.
  • Experience with transmission planning or interconnection studies and related software.

Responsibilities

  • Review proposed project facilities, including interconnection design and modeling data.
  • Prepare base cases for interconnection studies.
  • Coordinate technical work with stakeholders and customers.

Job description

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity across more than 11,000 circuit‑miles of high‑voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across New York State.

The NYISO Interconnection Studies department invites applications for a full‑time Planning Engineer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Review proposed project facilities, including the conceptual interconnection design and associated modeling data.
  • Prepare base cases for interconnection studies.
  • Coordinate technical work with Interconnection Customers, transmission owners, consultants, and other stakeholders.
  • Perform or review technical analysis—steady state, short‑circuit, and/or stability—for interconnection studies.
  • Evaluate system upgrade or deliverability requirements and develop cost estimates for identified upgrades.
  • Prepare and review interconnection study reports and associated documentation.
  • Lead or participate in project study meetings.
  • Participate and present at stakeholder meetings.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (power‑systems concentration preferred).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in power‑system planning or design, especially transmission system facilities.
  • Experience with computer programs used in transmission planning or interconnection studies—power flow, short‑circuit, and/or transient stability.
  • Knowledge of software tools such as Siemens PTI PSS/E, PowerGEM TARA, ASPEN, and related programs.
  • Knowledge of reliability standards and practices related to power‑system planning and design.
Position Level

Associate Engineer (0‑3 years of experience), Engineer (3‑5 years of experience), or Senior Engineer (5+ years of experience) based on qualifications.

Benefits and Compensation

Competitive salary range of $80,800 to $135,000 USD and a comprehensive benefits package.
