Job summary

Draper City is seeking a Development Coordinator to manage intake and routing of development-related applications for the Planning division. You will assist with zoning reviews, permits, and short-term rentals, offering guidance to the public and developers.

The role supports staff in reviews, prepares staff reports, and may present applications to the Planning Commission and City Council as needed. Local government experience is beneficial.

Qualifications

  • Two years of customer service experience required or preferred.
  • Experience in development, permitting, or related environment preferred.
  • Valid Utah driver license or ability to obtain within 6 months.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Planning Manager, manages the initial acceptance and routing of all development related applications and materials submitted to the Planning division for review. Completes planning and zoning reviews for; business licenses, signage, building permits, accessory dwelling unit permits, short-term rental permits, and limited land use applications. This position offers professional advice and guidance to both the development community and citizens, who approach the Community Development department counter for assistance. Progression in the position may include occasional review and processing of land use applications which include the writing of staff reports, and the presentation of applications before the Planning Commission and City Council.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Receive and route development applications as submitted by the development community and public.
  • Create and maintain electronic files for each development application submitted.
  • Process development applications, sign permits, and zoning research requests.
  • Assist in the review of building permit applications for zoning compliance.
  • Process and review accessory dwelling unit permits and short-term rental permits for zoning compliance.
  • Staff the Community Development front counter and phone lines to answer basic questions concerning planning, zoning, and development applications while directing more in-depth inquiries or those outside of this scope to the appropriate representative.
  • Interpret the city’s development related ordinances and policies in the review of development applications and in response to inquiries from the general public.
  • Coordinate with development applicants in the processing of their applications.
  • Review and interpret commercial and residential development plans.
  • Occasional presentation of development applications to the Draper City Planning Commission and City Council.
  • Provide support to the Planners on land use and ordinance studies.
  • Promote a high level of customer service in the department and good public relations.
  • Assist in the preparation and posting of public notices on properties throughout the city.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education – High school diploma or G.E.D. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or University in urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, real estate, public administration, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience – Two years of customer service experience. Experience in a development, permitting, or relevant environment is preferred.
  • License – Preference given for those with a valid Utah Driver License, or the ability to get one within 6 months of hire.

    • Communicate and coordinate effectively with other city staff, members of the development community, and the public.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Typical office setting with comfortable climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities such as walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required for most essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Occasionally
lifts or otherwise moves objects weighing up to 25 pounds. This position has exposure to stressful situations. Work is often performed under deadlines and time constraints. May drive a motor vehicle. Attendance at evening meetings on occasion. Work is onsite, in office, without option for remote work.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
  • Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., onsite, in office. (Limited scheduling flexibility may be permitted with Department Director Approval).
  • Salary range: $21.53 – $35.92 (Starting wage is dependent on experience.)
