Job summary

Qualifications

• Degree in urban or regional planning, geography, public administration, engineering or related field.
• Two years of urban/regional planning experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Performs professional planning projects related to the development, implementation, and maintenance of the County’s Comprehensive Plan, Detailed Land Use Plans, and other long-range planning initiatives.
• Researches planning issues, evaluates existing conditions and relevant information, and develops recommendations, reports, policies, and plan materials.
• Coordinates assigned planning projects and ensures work is completed accurately and within established timelines.
• Develops and updates maps, land-use plans, charts, graphs, and other visual materials using GIS and related software.
• Analyzes geographic and planning data and translates technical information into clear, understandable materials for staff, governing bodies, and the public.
• Reviews planning, development, economic, transportation, land-use, and related projects for consistency with adopted plans, policies, ordinances, and applicable standards.
• Provides planning assistance to participating municipalities and other local governmental entities, including research, technical information, meeting support, and preparation of requested materials.
• Prepares and delivers presentations on planning projects, plans, studies, data, and recommendations to staff, planning boards, governing bodies, professional groups, and the public.
• Responds to inquiries from the public, property owners, developers, municipal representatives, and other interested parties regarding comprehensive planning, land use, procedures, policies, and regulations.
• Assists with planning studies, research, documentation, and other professional planning activities, coordinating complex or specialized matters with the Senior Planner or Planning Manager.

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban or regional planning, geography, public administration, engineering, community development, or a related field and two (2) years of experience in urban, city, regional, or community planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Management Preference:

Plan design and GIS mapping experience preferred

AICP certification is preferred.

• Knowledge of the County’s zoning, land use, and other ordinances and codes, particularly those applicable to the assigned program area.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of community and economic development, public sector planning, and/or landscape design.
• Knowledge of governmental laws, programs, and services pertinent to community and economic development and planning processes.
• Knowledge of the environmental and socio-economic implications of the planning process.
• Knowledge of GIS systems, including the application of software, hardware, and peripherals to planning needs.
• Skill in the collection, analysis, and presentation of technical data and planning recommendations.
• Skill in conflict resolution, meeting facilitation, and public presentations.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community groups, federal, State, regional, and County officials, and the general public.
• Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and studies.
• Ability to express ideas effectively.
