Planner II

ABOUT THIS POSITION:

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $69,742.40 - 85,425.60

SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm. This position may require some evening and weekend work.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

Are you an energetic, outgoing, and well-organized planner? Are you passionate about engaging the community? Are you interested in improving multi-modal transportation in a rapidly growing town? Can you work well independently and in a team? If so, the Planner II position in the Long Range section of the Town of Apex Planning Department may be for you!

The Planner II performs intermediate-level professional planning work. This position focuses on community engagement and supporting transit planning. Responsibilities may include coordinating, supporting, and leading minor transit projects; leading community engagement initiatives; conducting research and writing; and supporting special projects. Additional duties may involve serving as staff to the Multimodal Transportation Advisory Board. The role involves significant public contact, often involving sensitive or emotional issues requiring judgment, firmness, and tact. The position aims to develop a positive relationship between the Town and the community. Work is evaluated based on work results and the acceptance of programs by the Town's leadership and citizens.

A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS:

  • Conduct research, synthesize information, and analyze data to inform long-range plan implementation, transit planning, and ordinance updates.
  • Prepare annual reports documenting progress on planning efforts.
  • Plan and participate in public workshops, charrettes, stakeholder interviews, and meetings to educate, gather input, and address questions.
  • Serve as staff support or representative on various boards and committees, including the Town’s Multimodal Transportation Advisory Board and others.
  • May serve as the customer service point of contact for GoApex under guidance.
  • Manage community engagement activities, including preparing communication materials and maintaining outreach contact databases.
  • Utilize visual design tools like Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, or similar software for community engagement materials.
  • Perform related duties as required and assist with special projects as directed.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

Bachelor’s Degree in urban or regional planning, geography, landscape architecture, or a related field, with at least two years of professional experience in public sector planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of public sector planning principles, practices, and relevant laws and programs.
  • Knowledge of environmental and socio-economic implications of planning.
  • Skill in collecting, analyzing, and presenting technical data and recommendations.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Conflict resolution, facilitation, and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to plan and execute public engagement processes.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with community groups, officials, and the public.
  • Ability to enforce codes with tact and firmness.
  • Excellent report writing and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; ArcGIS Pro is preferred.
