Job description

This position is responsible for providing planning support, technical review, and processing development applications and plans. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Planning & Economic Development Manager.

This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply.

Per Florida Statute 295.065, certain servicemembers and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such servicemembers and veterans, receive preference and priority. Some servicemembers may be eligible for waivers for postsecondary educational requirements in employment by the state and its political subdivisions. Applicants are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities
  1. Review development applications for compliance with the City's Comprehensive Plan, Land Development Regulations (LDR), and local ordinances.
  2. Analyze and oversee development proposals, including site plans, modifications, landscape plans, rezoning, conditional uses, amendments, variances, and subdivision plats.
  3. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with applicants regarding project status.
  4. Make presentations to boards and committees.
  5. Conduct studies and data collection on planning-related issues.
  6. Gather statistics, prepare reports, exhibits, and make recommendations for the Planning Manager.
  7. Respond to public inquiries regarding development, planning, and zoning issues.
  8. Assist property owners with compliance to regulations and standards.
  9. Attend and conduct meetings with property owners, applicants, professionals, and citizen groups.
  10. Perform site visits and inspections, including commercial landscape inspections.
  11. Stay updated with relevant federal, state, and local regulations and standards.
  12. Prepare public notices for land development applications.
  13. Foster positive employee relations and morale city-wide.
  14. Provide planning services at the front counter for walk-in customers.
  15. Be alert to safety hazards during inspections and site activities.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Urban Planning or related field from an accredited institution.
  • At least three (3) years of land use planning, zoning code, and development experience.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License.

Equivalent combinations of higher education and experience may be considered if relevant.

Physical Demands
  • Light to occasional heavy work.
  • Frequent walking, standing, climbing, reaching, bending.
  • Good dexterity, hand/eye coordination, eyesight, hearing, speech.
  • Regular driving required.
Work Environment

Primarily indoor work with intermittent exposure to adverse weather conditions, construction sites, hazards, traffic, and machinery during inspections. Safety awareness is essential.
