Job summary

Newport-Mesa USD is seeking an instructional assistant for 4 to 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, 9 months per year. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list for assignments over the next six months and may be called as needed.

Education and experience required: high school diploma and two years paid or volunteer work with children in a specialized learning environment. This role supports teachers and students in special education settings and performs clerical tasks as needed.

The Vacancy, Basic Function, Minimum Qualifications

We are anticipating openings in this classification. These jobs can be from 4 to 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, 9 months per year. All who are successful with the testing process will be on the eligible list and can be considered for an assignment anytime within the next 6 months.

By contractual agreement, salaries will be increased by 4% on 7/1/09. Newport-Mesa USD has a superior benefit package for those assignments that are 20 hours or more per week.

Education And Experience:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years of paid and/or volunteer experience working with children requiring a specialized learning environment.

Job Responsibilities

Representative Duties:

  • Provide instructional support and assistance to teachers and students assigned to a designated mild, moderate, moderate severe or Early Childhood special education instructional program; communicate with teachers regarding the individual needs of special education students.
  • Provide instructional assistance to individual or groups of special education students in a special class or when they are mainstreamed into regular classrooms or out in the community; assist special and regular education students whom they are mainstreamed with during classroom activities and various other activities as directed; assist students with meeting the goals and objectives of their Individual Education Plan.
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing, typing and duplicating instructional materials, scoring papers and recording grades; assist in keeping attendance; prepare and maintain student records and files as necessary.
  • Assist assigned teacher with the implementation of lesson plans; assist in administering, proctoring, scoring tests and papers and charting student progress; modify materials and explain instructions and words.
  • Reinforce instruction to students with learning disabilities and language, communication and behavioral problems; confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet the individual needs of special education students.
  • Observe and control behavior of students according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
  • Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating office and classroom equipment and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials.
  • Direct group activities of students as needed; assist in monitoring recesses, assemblies and playgroup activities; accompany students on field trips.
  • Assist students with developing self-help, toileting, personal hygiene, social and communication skills.
  • Maintain an orderly, attractive and positive learning environment; assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; administer basic first aid and dispense medications as necessary.
  • Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment including a typewriter, VCR, copier, fax machines, computer and laminator.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

VACATION – HOLIDAYS - ILLNESS

Employees accumulate twelve (12) days of vacation during the first year of employment, increasing up to twenty-two (22) days beginning the 18th year of service, prorated for part-time, 9, 10, and 11 month assignments. The number of paid holidays per year varies from twelve (12) to fourteen (14) days depending on the work calendar. Employees accumulate twelve (12) days of paid sick leave per year, with unlimited accumulation, prorated for part-time, 9, 10, and 11 month employees.

RETIREMENT

All employees who are in the classified service and work four (4) hours per day or more are members of the Public Employees\' Retirement System (CalPERS) and Federal Social Security. If an employee in the classified service works less than four (4) hours per day they are members of an Alternate Retirement System (PARS) and do not contribute to Social Security. Approximately 7% is deducted from your paycheck for PERS retirement.

HEALTH & WELFARE

The District offers a comprehensive health benefits program for employees who work twenty (20) hours or more per week. This includes medical, vision, dental insurance plans and life insurance for employees. For full-time employees the District pays the employee's health, vision, dental, and life insurance premiums with an employee contribution required for some plans. For part-time employees plans are available on a prorated basis. Dependent coverage is available.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

The District encourages employees to pursue professional growth. Professional growth points shall be earned by employee participation while in non-paid status in activities which are employment related. Professional growth points are awarded annually and accumulate at $20 per approved Professional Growth Point and/or tuition and textbook reimbursement up to $500 is also available - limited to one per year.
