Description

This position is responsible for the presentation of entertaining and educational programming Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium, and it is responsible for the operation of IT and AV equipment in the Chaffee Planetarium and Meijer Theater at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. The position must be able to competently interpret and explain astronomy and science concepts to a wide range of diverse audiences, including K-12 classes, families, children, professional groups, and the general public. The position will, when necessary, assist with public programming and education events. This position reports directly to the Planetarium/Theater Manager.

Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES including, but not limited to:

• Strives to deliver a high-quality, positive experience to Museum visitors.
• Operates the Planetarium console before and during programs.
• Enthusiastically presents live, interactive planetarium shows to school groups and Museum visitors.
• Interprets scientific/astronomical concepts to Museum visitors.
• Courteously answers questions and knowledgeably responds to comments about the Planetarium environment, as well as other services, facilities, programs, and events taking place at the Museum.
• Prepares and operates computers, projectors, microphones and other equipment in the Theater.
• Provides professional, knowledgeable and courteous support during Theater setup and operation.
• Actively controls audio and lighting levels for Theater events, lectures, performances and weddings.
• Troubleshoots and resolves minor issues with Theater and Planetarium equipment.
• Participates in special events and activities within the Museum.
• Assists with the formulation and communication of new strategies with relevant content of science news and discoveries.
• Assist with researching and creating new planetarium shows and education strategies.
• Stay up-to-date with space news and discoveries.
• Other duties as assigned.

WORKSKILLS:

EXPERIENCE:

• Experience working in front of a public audience, including children.
• Working with computers/technology, Windows, PowerPoint, projectors, iPads, and light/soundboards.
• Experience with presenting complex subject matter.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Thorough knowledge of the night sky and the scientific field of astronomy, including some mythology.
• Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills are required as well as a general understanding of audio and video equipment.
• Ability to work in a darkened environment.
• Ability to educate and present with accurate knowledge of the subject matter.
• Ability to demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

EDUCATION:

• Associate Degree or two-year coursework with equivalent experience in astronomy, education, or related field.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Must be able to move, bend, stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds and climb ladders up to 12 feet.
• Must be able to operate proficiently in darkened work environments during planetarium shows.
