Job Description

Prepare, season, and cook soups, meats, vegetables, desserts, or other foodstuffs in restaurants. Responsibilities may include ordering supplies, keeping records and accounts, pricing menu items, or planning menus.

Essential Functions
  • Inspect food preparation and serving areas to ensure safe, sanitary food-handling practices.
  • Turn or stir foods to ensure even cooking.
  • Season and cook food according to recipes or personal judgment and experience.
  • Test foods for doneness using tasting, smelling, or piercing methods.
  • Weigh, measure, and mix ingredients with various kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Portion, arrange, garnish, and serve food.
  • Regulate oven, broiler, grill, and roaster temperatures.
  • Assist other cooks during emergencies or busy periods.
  • Cook meats, fish, vegetables, and other foods using baking, roasting, broiling, and steaming techniques.
  • Prepare fruits and vegetables for consumption.
  • Estimate food consumption, requisition supplies, or procure food from storage.
  • Carve and trim meats for service or sandwiches.
  • Butcher and dress animals, fowl, or shellfish, or prepare meat prior to cooking.
  • Prepare relishes and hors d'oeuvres.
