About This Position

The Planning & Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring the safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. The process is governed through development and enforcement of the city's General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, Historic Preservation Ordinance, Phoenix Building Construction Code, and other city codes and ordinances.

The PDD is currently looking for a Traffic Engineer II to join their Plan Review section. The Traffic Engineer II works under the guidance of a licensed professional engineer and plays a key role in shaping how private development interacts with the city's transportation network. This position focuses on reviewing development site plans for street infrastructure requirements, subdivision street layouts, access management, and parking design. The successful candidate will participate in pre application and preliminary site approval meetings, presenting required stipulations and technical comments. Additional responsibilities include providing coverage at the Traffic Site Development Counter and reviewing paving plans, design reports, lot divisions, abandonments, and plats to ensure compliance with Traffic Engineering standards. This role follows a standard schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

SALARY

Pay Range: $90,459.20 to $121,243.20 annually.

Hiring Range: $90,459.20 to $104,728.00 annually.

  • Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

Minimum Qualifications
  • One year of experience performing entry level traffic engineering work.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, including courses in traffic engineering or highway engineering.
  • Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience reading construction documents.
  • Code, ordinance, and policy administration experience.
  • Experience conducting meetings and presentations.
  • Public counter or customer service experience.
  • Experience in the Land Development field.
  • Experience reviewing civil or site plans.
  • Electronic plan review (ProjectDox) experience.
