Cameron County is seeking a Plan Examiner to review residential and commercial plans for code compliance, provide guidance to architects and contractors, and maintain comprehensive records. This role requires knowledge of building codes and the ability to resolve discrepancies through field verification and documentation.
The position emphasizes examining blueprints and site plans, hosting meetings, and ensuring adherence to county rules.
Salary: 112 - $37,678.00 minimum salary.
Performs professional technical work reviewing plans, blueprints, site plans, and specifications submitted with a building permit application or site development for the construction of new residential and commercial structures. Other duties include hosting meetings, receiving and resolving staff questions and citizen complaints, performing field inspections, and ensuring compliance with building codes, subdivision regulations, and other County rules. Other duties as required. Positions in this class perform routine technical and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer questions; and maintain documents and records.

High School Diploma or GED required. Associates degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school preferred. Requires two (2) years' experience in reading and interpreting architectural/engineering plans, blueprints, site plans, and drawings. Must obtain Certification as an International Code Council Inspector and a Certification as an International Code Council Plan Examiner within six (6) months of employment.
Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (20-50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or work station.
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
This position is subject to a six (6) month probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility. Must submit to a Civil Service Clerical Exam.
