Job summary

Y-12 National Security Complex seeks a mechanical piping designer to support nuclear and non‑nuclear projects. You will prepare piping drawings, calculations and specifications, and perform related design outputs with an emphasis on quality and safety.

The role involves collaboration with project engineering, operations, and cross‑functional teams. Responsibilities include testing support, BOM creation for cost estimates, and 3D modeling tasks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science from an ABET-accredited program in the United States or equivalent
  • MS in Engineering/Physical Science; PhD accepted

Job description

What You'll Do

Applicant will provide engineering, walk‑downs and inspections for piping systems in support of nuclear and non‑nuclear projects at Y-12. Design involves the preparation of design output documents including piping drawings, construction drawings, calculations, equipment data sheets and specifications. Other activities include testing support, preparation of bills of material for cost estimating and man‑hour estimates. Experience with 3D modeling is desirable. This position primarily provides mechanical piping design support to the projects engineering group but could also involve existing facilities “Operations” design support as day‑to‑day assignments can change due to shifting workloads and Facility needs. A working knowledge of ASME B31 is also desirable. Responsibilities can include both independent tasks as well as being part of multi‑discipline teams. As needed, design support of existing process facilities could include minor modification designs, preparation of procurement documents and support, system change control support, system walkdowns, maintenance of configuration control documentation, maintenance/construction field support, test plans and startup support, and unit operations troubleshooting.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science (Chemistry, Physics, or related) from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET. OR MS in Engineering/Physical Science. OR PhD in Engineering/Physical Science.
  • There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post‑graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
    • 3.0/4.0 minimum cumulative GPA for Bachelor degree
    • 3.3 minimum cumulative GPA for Master degree
    • 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA for PhD
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job‑related, and 1‑year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Preferred Job Requirements
  • A Professional Engineering License (PE) is preferred but not required.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which requires successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence‑scope polygraph examination.
