Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN is seeking a DMD Piping Engineer to work from associate through senior specialist levels. This role focuses on designing and optimizing piping systems for critical facilities, sizing lines, and selecting components to ensure safe operations.

You will perform relief valve sizing, conduct design calculations per ASME B31.1/B31.3, and prepare P&IDs, data sheets, and BOMs while adhering to industry standards and DOE requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in engineering or physical science from an ABET-accredited program in the US/Canada/Mexico or equivalent; MS or PhD acceptable (advanced degrees require a related undergrad).
  • GPA requirements: 3.0/4.0 for Bachelor, 3.3 for Master, 3.5 for PhD; GPA considered for up to 4 years post-grad.

Responsibilities

  • Design equipment and piping systems, including line sizing and process calculations, and select piping components such as valves and regulators.
  • Size relief valves and perform calculations to ensure safety and compliance with ASME B31, API, and Boiler Code.
  • Conduct walk-downs and inspections of process and utility piping systems.
  • Prepare reports, drawings/ sketches, and technical documents (Equivalencies, P&IDs, data sheets, BOMs).
  • Apply relevant standards and codes (ASME B31.1/B31.3, ASTM, AWWA) in design work.
  • Plan and execute project tasks including scope, timelines, requirements, scheduling, and field verification.

What You'll Do
Key Resposibilities
  • Perform equipment and piping system designs including line sizing and perspressure drop calculations. This will also inolve the selction of piping components (e.g., valves, regulators, pumps, etc.).
  • Perform relief valve sizing calculations to ensure safety and compliance with industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31, API, and Boiler Pressure Vessel code).
  • Perform walk-downs and inspections of process and utility piping systems.
  • Prepare written reports, drawings/sketches, and technical documents (Equivalencies, P&IDs, data sheet, and bills of material).
  • Utilize appropriate regulations, design codes, and sandards, including ASME B31.1 and B31.3, ASTM, AWWA as well as other relevant industry standards.
  • Plan and self-perform project tasks including scope development, design timelines, requirements, schedule, research, design review, and field verifiation.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science [Chemistry, Physics, or related] from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET. OR MS in Engineering/Physical science. OR PhD in Engineering/Physical science. (Advanced degrees require a technical undergraduate degree.)
  • There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
    • 3.0/4.0 minimum cumulative GPA for Bachelor degree
    • 3.3 minimum cumulative GPA for Master degree
    • 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA for PhD
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.   • Technical knowledge of related engineering systems, applications of engineering and construction methods and materials, and engineering applicaiton of computers.
  • Experience with Microstation or other CAD software.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
