Summary

This Pipefitter position is located in the Facility Maintenance Service Line at the Department of Veterans Affairs, VHA Connecticut, West Haven Campus, under the HVAC & Mechanical Pipe Shop Supervisor. The role involves modifying, maintaining, and repairing a variety of high, medium, and low-pressure piping systems.

Duties

The incumbent will:

  • Cut, thread, and install pipe, hangers, pipe insulation, condensate tanks, pumps, steam & hot water heating devices, heat controls, condensate traps, circulating pumps, radiators, and electric hot water heaters.
  • Install, plumb, and maintain various lines (copper, cast & black iron, steel, brass, plastic), drains, vents, fixtures, and medical and food service equipment.
  • Perform welding repairs and fabrication using oxygen, acetylene, arc welding, and pipe welding techniques.
  • Test systems and equipment after repairs.
  • Inspect, adjust, clean, and repair plumbing fixtures, steam equipment, heating and water systems, kitchen and laundry equipment, air compressors, medical compressed air systems, vacuum, oxygen, and natural gas systems.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and manufacturer specifications.
  • Conduct safety and preventive maintenance inspections in accordance with VA Regulations and National Codes.
  • Make pressure and fixture calculations to ensure proper piping and equipment setup.
  • Test systems post-repair and ensure preventive maintenance is performed using available tools.
Work Schedule

40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm EST

Physical Requirements

Must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, work in tiring positions, handle and lift parts up to 50 pounds, occasionally more.

Additional Notes
  • This is an NAGE Bargaining Unit position at the Newington, CT Campus.
  • Current and former federal employees must submit SF-50s indicating their previous positions.
  • This position is in the competitive service.
  • Veterans' Preference rules do not apply due to the use of direct hire authority, but qualified veterans will be considered.
  • Position is covered by locality pay.

Qualifications
