Murray State University in Murray, KY is seeking a full-time Piano Technician to maintain ~70 pianos across concert and teaching spaces. The role will work with the Music Department chair to establish a long-range maintenance plan and to oversee instrument inventory.

The technician will perform tuning, repair and maintenance, supervise student workers, and coordinate with music faculty on planning maintenance, moves, and replacements; some evenings/weekends required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum two years post-high school piano repair training or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge of piano tuning, repair, and rebuilding.
• Knowledge of instrument inventory and checkout procedures.
• Ability to supervise moving pianos.
• Fine motor skills and good ear for sound.

Responsabilités

• Tuning, repair and maintenance for concert and practice pianos.
• Maintain pianos in faculty studios and classrooms; some evenings/weekends for concerts.
• Oversee piano maintenance budget with department chair.

Summary of Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Music in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, seeks a full-time Piano Technician who will maintain concert, studio, rehearsal hall, and practice room pianos (approximately 70). The successful candidate will work with the chair to develop and institute a long-term plan for ongoing maintenance and replacement of pianos at the University and provide oversight to the Department of Music instrument inventory.

• Tuning, Repair and Maintenance
  • Maintain performance pianos (3) in “concert ready” condition for concerts and recitals
  • Maintain additional pianos in faculty studios, classrooms, and student practice rooms
  • Some evenings and weekends will be required for special concert tunings
  • Oversee the piano maintenance budget in coordination with the chair
  • Work with the faculty of the Department of Music to plan the maintenance, overhaul, moving and replacement of pianos
• Staffing and Inventory
  • Organize, oversee, and train student workers
  • Serve as a staff resource for all students as it relates to general care and maintenance of musical instruments
  • Oversee the department’s concert band, jazz band, and marching band musical instrument inventory. This includes keeping accurate records of instrument checkout and return and providing a detailed instrument inventory at the conclusion of every semester.

Minimum Education Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED

Minimum Experience and Skill Requirements:

• Two years of post-high school training in piano repair technology or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge of piano tuning, repair, and rebuilding at the highest level
• Knowledge of instrument repair and maintenance
• Knowledge of inventory and check-out procedures
• Knowledge of tools and instruments, such as tuning hammers, regulating tools, and hand tools, is required.
• In-depth knowledge of piano makes and models
• Knowledge of piano mechanisms
• A good ear for sound quality and pitch
• Fine motor skills
• Must be able to supervise and assist moving pianos

Preferred Education and/or Experience Qualifications:

• At least three years of related work experience in tuning, regulating, repairing, and maintaining pianos for artist-level teaching and performance
• Certification by the Piano Technician’s Guild
• Excellent organizational skills and initiative, including ability to work independently with limited supervision
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a wide range of people
• Willingness or desire to teach tuning and other piano technician skills
• As needed, maintain and repair wind and string instruments owned by Murray State University, or provide oversight for outsourcing repairs

Physical Demands:

• Required to walk, sit, stand, bend, climb, stoop, and kneel.

Work Hours:

• Normal working hours.
• Evenings and weekends may be required for special concert tunings.
