Job description

Summary

This position will be located at the Department of Veterans Affairs - Veterans Health Administration (VHA) - Fredericksburg Health Care Center (FHCC). The duties and responsibilities are carried out throughout all clinical and other Veterans care areas involved with the FHCC Neurology Section. This position reports directly to the FHCC Neurology Leadership of the parent facility - Richmond VA Medical Center to ensure collaboration and alignment for goals of Central Virginia VA Health Care System.

Qualifications

• United States citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or District of Columbia.
• Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification.
• Alternatively, one year of post medical school training (internship or first year of residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice under a full and unrestricted license in the United States.
• Alternatively, non‑US residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States performing duties related to the position.
• Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis.
• Optional: PRPs are not considered independent practitioners, do not have privilege, and have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
• Optional: Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
• In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may request approval for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement based on the physician’s composite record of experience, accomplishments, performance, and qualifications.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred experience: Experience in sleep medicine.
• Board certification in sleep medicine.
• Clinical practice exclusively in sleep medicine or a combination of sleep medicine and pulmonary medicine.
• Physical requirements: Must meet the physical standards for the position, including lifting 15–44 pounds, pushing (approximately 2 hours), reaching above shoulders, use of fingers and both hands, walking and standing for 3–5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, depth perception and color discrimination. Hearing aid is permitted.

Duties

• Assessment and evaluation of sleep disorders using a combination of clinical evaluation and physiologic testing.
• Treatment of Veterans with sleep disorders with medications and other modalities such as CPAP, BiPAP, oral appliances, positional education, referral for maxillofacial and upper airway surgery, etc.
• Recognition of medical, neurologic, and psychiatric disorders displaying symptoms likely to be related to sleep disorder.
• Supervision of medical instrument technicians.
• Provide teaching for internal medicine residents, medical students, etc.
• Additional assigned duties.
• Ability to function within a large, complex organization that requires cooperation with multiple services, including community care, prosthetics service, medical administration, medical records, group medical practices, etc.
• Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM.
