Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy.
- Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an approved school.
- Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
- Residency Training: Completion of approved residency training leading to eligibility for board certification, as approved by the VA.
- Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Additional Requirement: Board Eligibility/Certification in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology.
- Physical Standards: Must meet physical requirements, including a physical exam prior to placement, and be able to perform duties involving lifting, reaching, walking, standing, and other physical activities.
Duties

- Develop and maintain expertise in Hematology/Oncology, including subspecialties if applicable.
- Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations, establish diagnoses, order and interpret diagnostic studies, and develop treatment plans.
- Manage patient care in the chemotherapy infusion unit, including orders for blood products and chemotherapy, and respond to consultation requests.
- Coordinate care among healthcare providers, provide telehealth services, attend tumor boards, and discuss advance care planning.
- Arrange procedures and biopsies, assist with marrow transplants, and obtain informed consents for procedures, including blood transfusions.
- Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
