Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or equivalent from an approved school.
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
- Residency Training: Completed residency approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Includes residencies approved by ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs with verified practice experience in the U.S.
- Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA residencies are eligible as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and appointed on an intermittent or fee basis; they are not considered independent practitioners.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Additional Requirement: Board Eligibility/Certification in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology.
- Physical Standards: Must meet physical requirements, including a physical exam prior to placement. This is a drug testing position with random testing post-appointment. Must be able to lift 15-44 pounds, push for about 2 hours, reach above shoulder, use fingers and both hands, walk and stand for 3-5 hours, kneel, and have good depth perception and color discrimination. Hearing aid permitted.
Duties

- Develop and maintain expertise in Hematology/Oncology, including GI and lung malignancies.
- Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations, establish diagnoses, order and interpret diagnostic tests, formulate treatment plans, and document patient encounters.
- Manage patient care in the chemotherapy infusion unit, including blood products and chemotherapy administration, and respond to consultation requests.
- Provide Hematology/Oncology care via telehealth, attend tumor boards, discuss end-of-life planning, coordinate procedures, and assist with marrow transplants.
- Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
