Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must meet the basic and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or licensing requirements, applicants may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements under previous standards are deemed to meet the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, as per VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or equivalent from an approved medical school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
  • Residency Training: Completion of approved residency training leading to eligibility for board certification. Residency must be approved by the VA, ACGME, AOA, or equivalent programs with at least five years of verified practice in the U.S. for non-US residencies.
  • Enrolled residents in ACGME/AOA accredited programs are eligible to be appointed as 'Physician Resident Providers' (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may only be appointed intermittently or on a fee basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements as per VA Handbook 5019.
Duties
  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric care, including psycho-diagnostic assessments, psychotherapeutic techniques, and pharmacological management.
  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations addressing mental health and psychosocial issues.
  • Identify patient problems, coordinate with multidisciplinary staff, and make appropriate referrals to specialty programs and community resources.
  • Deliver therapeutic interventions, including diagnosis, medication management, suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention, and overall psychiatric care across various clinical settings.
  • Participate in team meetings, treatment planning, and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Order diagnostic tests, interpret findings, and make treatment decisions.
  • Ensure practice aligns with Joint Commission, VA policies, clinical guidelines, and HIPAA.
  • Participate in supervision, teaching, on-call duties, and other related responsibilities.
  • Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
