Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved school.
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the US.
- Residency Training: Completion of an approved residency program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs are eligible for appointment as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.

- Physical requirements: Sedentary work, with some walking, standing, bending, and carrying light items.
Duties
- Provide outpatient psychiatric services, including face-to-face and telepsychiatry, in accordance with privileges and guidelines at the Phoenix VA Health Care System.
- Screen, evaluate, and admit or enroll patients to psychiatric programs.
- Deliver a full spectrum of diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitation services, emphasizing a least restrictive approach.
- Order and evaluate diagnostic studies, including lab tests, X-rays, EKGs, and HIV tests.
- Provide psychiatric on-call coverage and consultation-liaison services.
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations and prescribe medications, including for smoking cessation, Buprenorphine, Clozapine, and evidence-based pharmacotherapy for substance use disorders.
- Monitor patient progress, obtain consent for hospitalization, and carry out health promotion activities.
- Provide education and counseling to patients and families.
- Document orders and notes in CPRS, including suicide risk assessments.
- Perform delegated tasks and provide telephone consultations.
- Participate in committees, teach and supervise students and residents, and potentially work via telehealth.
