Summary
A Palliative Medicine consultant is a physician responsible for improving the palliative medical care delivered by the Palliative Medicine Consultation Team (PCCT).
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met previous qualification standards at initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
- Degree: Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
- Licensure: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. or its territories.
- Residency Training: Completion of an accredited residency program leading to eligibility for board certification, approved by the VA.
- Residency Types: Approved by ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs with at least five years of verified practice in the U.S.
- Enrolled Residents: Eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) if fully licensed and in an approved residency program.
- Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Board Certification: Must be board certified in Internal Medicine, Family Practice, or Osteopathic Medicine, and in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
- Preferred Experience: At least 2 years in Palliative Medicine, or recent fellowship training; experience supervising medical students, residents, fellows; research publications; faculty appointment at Vanderbilt University at the level of Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor.
- Physical Requirements: Capable of performing examinations, diagnosis, and treatment planning; physically and mentally capable of handling physical activities and emotional stability.
Duties
- Provide consultation services in palliative medicine.
- Facilitate clarification of patient and family goals of care.
- Consult with the attending physician and interdisciplinary team to establish care plans.
- Facilitate access to supportive care services.
- Educate staff and coworkers.
- Document patient care services accurately for billing.
- Participate in on-call coverage and team meetings.
- Assist in developing standards of care.
- Perform other duties as requested.
- Support comprehensive interdisciplinary palliative care assessment, management, and bereavement for veterans.
- Utilize MS Office software for documentation, data display, and presentations.
- Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM.
