Summary
A Palliative Medicine consultant is a physician responsible for improving the palliative medical care delivered by the Palliative Medicine Consultation Team (PCCT).
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the previous qualification standards are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA Policy.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. or its territories.
- Residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs with verified practice experience.
- Residents enrolled in accredited residency programs are eligible for appointment as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may be appointed on a fee-basis. PRPs are not independent practitioners and have a restricted scope of practice under supervision.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Additional requirements include board certification in Internal Medicine, Family Practice, or Osteopathic Medicine, and board certification or eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
- Preferred experience includes at least 2 years in Palliative Medicine, supervising medical trainees, research publications, and faculty appointment eligibility at Vanderbilt University.
- Physicians should be physically and mentally capable of performing examinations, diagnosing, and treatment planning, with physical activity including sitting, standing, walking, lifting, reaching, and bending. Emotional and mental stability are also required.
Duties
- Provide consultation services in palliative medicine.
- Facilitate clarification of patient and family goals of care.
- Collaborate with the attending physician and interdisciplinary team to develop and review care plans.
- Facilitate access to supportive care services.
- Educate staff and coworkers.
- Document patient care services comprehensively for billing purposes.
- Participate in on-call coverage and interdisciplinary team meetings.
- Assist in developing standards of care and perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and organization.
- Support the Palliative Care Program at the Nashville Campus, focusing on comprehensive assessment, management, and bereavement for older veterans.
- Utilize MS Office software for document management, data display, and presentation development.
- Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM.
