Summary

The physician functions within an interdisciplinary staff consisting of physicians, physician extenders, technicians, administrative and clerical staff. The physician is responsible and accountable for ensuring the provision of comprehensive surgical/clinical ophthalmic services, resident supervision, and compliance with established policies within the department of surgery/ophthalmology section.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide comprehensive Ophthalmology care services, follow-up care of existing conditions, and management of emergency conditions.
  2. Provide Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Ophthalmology Services, including hospital rounds.
  3. Perform/supervise Ophthalmic Surgery including laser procedures in the Operating Room, minor surgery room, and laser room, averaging 1-5 cases per day based on complexity.
  4. Conduct weekly outpatient and inpatient clinics, averaging 20-25 patients per day.
  5. Provide non-operative Ophthalmology hospital rounds for ophthalmology patients.
  6. Document services through appropriate notes, such as History and Physical, Progress notes, Operative notes, and Discharge Summaries.
  7. Critique Morbidity and Mortality information and documentation.
  8. Alternate On-Call coverage with other VAMC Staff Ophthalmology Surgeons and outside consultants.
  9. Educate residents and students in the principles and therapy of complex and basic Ophthalmology Services/Surgery.
  10. Participate in clinical research protocols, either developed locally or at other institutions for multi-center studies.
  11. Assist residents and students in preparing abstracts for presentation at meetings.
  12. Perform administrative duties for the Ophthalmology Section, including supervising senior ophthalmology residents, teaching medical students and residents, developing policies, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
  13. Ensure continuing education of staff under supervision.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment include U.S. Citizenship, drug screening, Selective Service registration (for males born after 12/31/1959), English proficiency, background/security investigation, pre-employment physical, and compliance with vaccination policies.

Qualifications

Must meet basic requirements including a degree in medicine from an accredited school, full unrestricted license, completed residency training, and proficiency in English. Preferred experience includes comprehensive cataract surgery, supervision of residents, and glaucoma or oculoplastics expertise.
