Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) — a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines the award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in the VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
• Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification.
• VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.
• Approved residencies: (1) Those approved by ACGME or AOA in the list published for the year the residency (or fellowship, if applicable) was completed.
• OR (2) One year of post–medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional‑year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice under a full and unrestricted license in the United States.
• OR (3) Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. (under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position. U.S. fellowships would be creditable toward this requirement.
• Resident physicians (PRPs) currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible for appointment as "Physician Resident Providers". PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis; they are not considered independent practitioners and are not privileged, but have a scope of practice allowing restricted duties under supervision.
• In rare and unusual circumstances, the Facility Director can submit a memo to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer, who may approve requests for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement if the physician’s composite record warrants such action.

Duties

• Open continuous announcement until September 30, 2026.
• Qualified applicants will be considered and referred as vacancies become available.
• VHA Physician Total Rewards package, including paid time off (50–55 days per year: 26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and a possible 5 days paid absence for CME).

• The neurologist is expected to perform all services required in the practice of neurology in the VA system and provide appropriate documentation in the electronic record.
• Provide direct patient‑centered care as delineated in the list of clinical privileges for Neurology.
• Provide comprehensive general neurological care to outpatients – patient history, neurological examination, diagnosis, follow‑up, and medical record documentation according to standard and acceptable practices.
• Assimilate results of diagnostic studies (e.g., EMG, EEG) into the formulation of a differential diagnosis and treatment plan.
• Work collaboratively with other specialists and Primary Care PACT teams to ensure continuous quality care.
• Prescribe medications according to federal and state law.
• Responsible for oversight of all aspects of neurologic care delivered to assigned patients.
• Perform neurologic procedures – such as NCS/EMG, EEG interpretation, and/or Botox administration – commensurate with individual training and expertise, in accordance with local VA credentialing and privileging requirements.
• Provide education to other physicians and healthcare professionals regarding neurological disorders and their treatments.
• Provide education, supervision, and mentoring to medical students, residents, and fellows in neurological disorders.
• Participate in inpatient–outpatient sub‑specialty duties as assigned, including on‑call assignments.
• Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; night and weekend call shared with other physicians will be required; alternate schedules may be necessary to meet organizational or veteran needs.
