Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in the VA who met the qualifications under the previous standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree obtained from a VA‑approved school in the year of completion.
• Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
• Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification.
• Residency may be ACGME or AOA approved, or other non‑U.S. residency followed by a minimum of five years of verified U.S. practice.
• Physician residents in accredited programs are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs) on an intermittent or fee‑basis, fully licensed, and will have a scoped range of duties under supervision.
• Board eligible or board certified preferred.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical requirements: pre‑employment physical; lifting 15–44 pounds; pushing for approximately 2 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing 3–5 hours; kneeling; rapid mental and muscular coordination; near vision 13–16 diopters; far vision 20/20 to 20/40; depth perception; basic color discrimination. Hearing aid permitted.

Duties

• Participate in and/or manage all aspects of a general Neurology program, including clinical, administrative, academic, and research components.
• Provide neurologic evaluation and treatment of veterans on an inpatient and outpatient basis, and counsel veterans and their families.
• Conduct clinical consultations for VAMC staff and manage patient caseloads that may be inpatient, outpatient, or both.
• Examine patients with neurological disorders, including treatment‑resistant headache, seizure disorders, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.
• Consult with primary care physicians when symptoms suggest a neurological issue.
• Perform neurological examinations (cranial nerve, cognitive status, motor skills, sensory functions) and order/interpret diagnostic testing.
• Communicate and document patient care clearly to patients and medical personnel, and share after‑hour call responsibilities with section physicians in rotation.
• Participate in quality assurance programs and chart reviews, complete medical records per bylaws, and serve on medical staff committee assignments.
