Summary

The VAMC in Lexington – Kentucky is recruiting for an Endocrinologist to serve as a full‑time medical service physician. The position is accountable to the Chief of Medicine for assuring the most effective delivery of state‑of‑the‑art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Physicians currently employed in VA who met the qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when no qualified citizens can be recruited.
• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed.
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification, or one of the specified alternative arrangements.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Special Appointment Options

• Resident physicians enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
• PRPs must have a full medical license and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis.
• PRPs are not independent practitioners and will be privileged only under a defined scope of practice.
• Additional options may exist for surgery residents in gap years or in rare circumstances approved by the facility director and VISN director.

Duties

• Provide inpatient and outpatient endocrinology consults, follow‑ups, and performance of endocrine procedures.
• Evaluate patients with a variety of endocrinology conditions and manage diabetes‑related treatment.
• Review no‑shows, contact patients for abnormal labs, and review refill requests.
• Offer ongoing care for patients with endocrinology conditions and develop individualized care plans.
• Assess, plan, implement, supervise, teach, evaluate, and document patient care.
• Serve as an integral member of the treatment team and promote a therapeutic environment.
• Demonstrate leadership and initiative in delivering holistic care and collaborating with others to ensure compliance with the mission, vision, and values of the medical center.
• Facilitate and promote staff interaction with patients and significant others.
• Maintain a voluntary or joint faculty appointment to supervise fellows and residents.
