Job description

Job Title and Overview

Huntington Health invites applications for a Board Certified Clinical Pathologist to serve as Director of the Clinical Laboratory and Blood Banking/Transfusion Services. The position is full‑time, 8‑hour days, located at 100 W California Blvd, Pasadena, CA.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical oversight and call coverage of blood banking and transfusion services, dispensing approximately 10,000 blood products per year.
• Oversee the hospital‑based donor center program with about 4,000 collections annually.
• Lead general laboratory operations, including Clinical Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Immunology, and Microbiology for inpatient laboratory services.
• Deliver leadership to laboratory staff, drive operational process improvements, and manage administrative and regulatory compliance.
• Collaborate interprofessionally with physicians, clinical lab scientists, nurses, and administrative leadership.
• Offer teaching opportunities and serve as a consultant for the medical staff on test interpretation and blood product utilization practices.
• Provide guidance for quality initiatives and clinical pathology testing throughout the organization.
• Potentially assume additional leadership roles, including CLIA Laboratory Director, as opportunities arise.

Qualifications

• Hold an M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or D.O. degree.
• Be eligible for or already hold an active California State Medical License.
• Be board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology.
• Possess American Board of Pathology certification in Blood Banking / Transfusion Medicine or relevant clinical experience in transfusion medicine.
• Preference for candidates with formal training or certification in Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, or Hematopathology.
• Ideally have at least three years of post‑training administrative experience in a clinical setting; recent graduates with strong pathology backgrounds are considered.
