Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Eligibility requirements must be met according to VHA policy, and the application must be submitted within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must meet the basic and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or licensing requirements, applicants may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. VA-employed physicians who initially met the qualification standards are deemed qualified.

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA policy)
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school
  • Current full and unrestricted medical or surgical license in the U.S.
  • Residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification, in an accredited program (ACGME, AOA, or equivalent)
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA programs are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may only serve on an intermittent or fee basis
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Physical requirements include frequent body movements, lifting, standing, and moving patients and equipment
Duties

The Cardiologist will have training and experience managing advanced heart failure patients, participate in inpatient and outpatient care, teaching, and research. Responsibilities include prescribing treatments, supervising trainees, providing consultations, performing procedures like echocardiography and stress testing, managing post-transplant and LVAD patients, and participating in quality assurance and telehealth initiatives. The role involves serving on committees, maintaining professional competency, and ensuring compliance with standards.
