Job description

Summary

The Cardiac Anesthesiologist Physician position is located in the Anesthesiology Service at the Manhattan VA Medical Center. This position supports the Network 2 Mission to care for our Veterans with compassion and excellence. The role involves providing a broad range of anesthesiology interventions to Veterans receiving care at the VAMC. Each Anesthesiologist functions as a cooperative and collegial team member with the entire staff.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met previous qualification standards at initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. or its territories.
  • Residency Training: Completion of an approved residency program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include those accredited by ACGME, AOA, or other local programs deemed appropriate by the Medical Staff Executive Committee.
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs who meet other requirements may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), but they are not considered independent practitioners.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Additional Requirement: TEE experience/certification.
  • Physical requirements as per VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Duties
  • Provide anesthesiology care at the Manhattan VA Medical Center, including cardiac (valve, CABG, etc.), TAVR, and structural heart disease cases.
  • Participate in cardiac call schedules and assist with non-cardiac cases as assigned.
  • Understand TAVR procedures and their anesthetic challenges to ensure patient safety.
  • Develop and implement anesthetic plans, anticipate procedural complications, and manage hemodynamic changes.
  • Participate in cardiac team meetings and preoperative evaluations, ensuring proper documentation.
