Job description

Position Summary

The Physician Assistant performs diagnostic and therapeutic tasks under the supervision and responsibility of the surgeon or anesthesiologist. They assist in gathering data necessary for the implementation of the surgeon’s or anesthesiologist’s therapeutic plan and act as a patient's advocate in the medical care system, serving as an advisor and liaison between patients and physicians.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's degree in a physical science from an accredited institution. Completion of an accredited physician assistant/surgical assistant program is required.
• License/Certification: Must be certified or eligible for certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants and the New Jersey State Board of Education and Licensure. Appointment as an Allied Health Practitioner with the Medical Center per the Medical Staff Bylaws. ACLS required (not required in Urgent Care Settings). BLSHCP required.
• Experience: Minimum two years recent experience in cardiothoracic surgery and/or general surgery.
• Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents will be trained and proficiency required within 30‑60 days.

Work Environment

Potential exposure to the hazards and risks of the hospital environment, including infectious disease, blood‑borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and injury.

• Considerable reaching, stooping, kneeling and crouching.
• Extensive standing and walking, including stairs.
• Lifting approximately 25‑50 pounds frequently.
• Lifting roughly 50‑100 pounds with assistance occasionally.
• Pushing and pulling heavy equipment.

Reporting Relationship

This position reports to department leadership and may supervise incumbents as assigned.
